Designing for disappearance vs notice
Designing for disappearance vs designing for notice.
My team shipped the same Data Entry Agent into two surfaces back to back in the last 30 days. Before we started building, I assumed the product challenges would be similar. They turned out to be different in ways I didn't fully appreciate initially, and the reason comes down to one question: did the user come to the AI, or did the AI come to the user?
When the user comes to the AI, they're in evaluation mode. They opened your product on purpose. Show me what you found, let me verify it, let me decide. Thoroughness and transparency are the goal. You're designing for notice.
When the AI comes to the user, they're in flow mode. They were mid-task doing something else. Don't derail me, just help me finish. Speed and accuracy are the goal. You're designing for disappearance.
Same output, completely different user reaction. The detail that builds trust in one surface breaks flow in the other.
